Poetry Ripcord

Poetry Ripcord

______ The site is designed to test your knowledge of the fundamentals of poetry. While the more standard version of Poetry Ripcord asks the reader when they would stop reading, this version asks you why an experienced poetry reader would stop reading after coming across the last line cited here--often the very first line in the poem! These are snippets from actual "poems" (we use the term loosely) posted to the internet by novice poets, used here under Fair Use for educational and critical purposes.

______To participate just click on the most obvious reasons that any discerning poetry reader would reach for the ripcord and bail out on the poem.

______After answering these simple questions please enter your name and email address in the spaces provided. The results and answers will be emailed to you.

My intentions

My intentions were just to talk with you,
till I looked in your pale blue eyes.
They plainly told of desires you have,
(though that came, to me, not as surprise).

Arabella sings the blues

They responded to her songs at last:
in the hot night, in the sultry dark,
some spark
inflamed the crowd.

She was Arabella Jones, famous once,
who sang sad songs, sang the blues
until booze
darkened her cloud.

The years had not been kind; her weary eyes
were dull with pain--times were tough,
she'd seen enough
of life's despair.
