When you have a fit for partner and are not
vulnerable you have the luxury of making a "Fit
Inspired Bid". The purpose of such a "FIB" can
be lead directing, investigatory or purely bluff.
S- x H- 1098xx D- Jxxxx C- Qx
Your partner opens 1D against vulnerable
opponents. RHO overcalls 1S. You don't have the
semblance of a 2H free ON STRENGTH, but 2H might
discover a double fit in the red suits. It might
also convince the opponents not to bid 4S on hands
where it may make.
S- xx H- J109x D- xx C- KQJx
After 1S-2H-3NT the favourable vulnerability
argues in favour of a 4H bid. But why bid it
directly? By bidding 4C en route to 4S you can
direct the lead in case your LHO bids 4S.
S- xxx H- Jxxxx D- Jxxxx C- void
LHO's game-forcing artificial 2C opening
bid meets with 2H by your partner and a 3H cuebid
by RHO. At equal or favourable vulnerability, bid
4C. This may make it slightly more difficult for
the opponents to find a Club fit, and may set up
the defence against 6S or 7S.
Look for opportunites to make these useful
and descriptive Fit Inspired Bids.
